Our work studying and protecting ancient forests would not be possible without the help of dedicated volunteers. Throughout the year you can find the Ancient Forest Society team working in various groves along the Sierra Nevada mountain range. There are opportunities for volunteers to join us in the trees. Depending on your interests, skills, and experience, volunteer opportunities range from helping our research efforts on the ground to climbing trees. Please complete our volunteer form if you’d like to get involved!
Volunteer Testimonials
Daniel Keeley (San Luis Obispo, CA)
“My time as a volunteer with the Ancient Forest Society (AFS) has been one of profound significance. Giant Sequoia trees are one of the world’s greatest natural features, and the work Ancient Forest Society does is an important step in the continued preservation of these trees and the lands on which they grow. I elected to volunteer because of the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Giant Sequoia trees, and since I began volunteering with AFS, my appreciation for these trees and the people that work among them has only deepened.”
Christian Feichtinger (Minneapolis, MN)
“I got the opportunity to join Ancient Forest Society in August of 2023 and as a tree climber it was the experience of a lifetime. Working in the giant sequoias was very humbling and an honor, they are millennia old and thinking about that and how important learning about them is to care for them makes Ancient Forest Societies work so awesome.”
Sky Lan (Eugene, OR)
“I really appreciate the work done by the Ancient Forest Society (AFS). It is very valuable to have more scientific information on this gorgeous but threatened species, on both sides of science and education. I truly believe this will broaden our knowledge about giant sequoias and may improve the management and policy to prevent those trees from climate change and wildfires. As a plant pathologist also working on tree canopies, I am so honored to join some field trips as a volunteer.”
Alicia Streetman (Truckee, CA)
“Being able to contribute to Ancient Forest Society’s work was a dream come true. Spending time up close (and up high!) with this incredible species made the field work so special and meaningful.”
Christian Garcia Arcos (Costa Mesa, CA)
“My time at the sequoias with Ancient Forest Society was one of the best experiences of my life, not only did AFS make my wish come true of climbing one of the biggest trees in the world but also allowed me to create memories and bonds that will last for a life time, I feel blessed to have worked with Anthony Ambrose & the team. I learned so much from this experience and I truly believe I am able to share this experience to the troubled youth in my community showing proof that no matter what past you come from you can too be part of amazing volunteer research experiences.”
Ben Fisher (Long Beach, CA)
“I consider it the absolute highest honor to be allowed to work with ancient trees and contribute to understanding, advocating for and assisting them through the work Ancient Forest Society is doing.”
