Giant sequoia bark beetle monitoring
See our bark beetle research Here
Giant sequoia trees are incredibly tough and resilient but face new threats in a rapidly changing climate. Fire damage compounded by drought stress is making giant sequoias vulnerable to native bark beetle attack. Ancient Forest Society is leading a new monitoring project across the entire sequoia range to better understand this threat and to inform management actions aiming to mitigate it.
This project is being done in collaboration with the Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition
First we collect data
This monitoring project starts with data on dead and dying giant sequoias that are likely under attack from bark beetles. Survey123 is the tool to collect information on sequoias that look like they are dead and dying.
We request anyone who works or visits giant sequoia groves to report any observations you see of dead and dying sequoias! It’s easy to upload your observations, as well as any photos you may have, into the survey. Scan the QR code or link below to access it.

Next, we take a closer look
Once we have data on sequoias that are dead and dying we will take a closer look. We will climb and use drones to gather more detailed data about the sequoias, looking for signs of bark beetles and tracking beetle activity and the health of the trees over time. This rangewide database will improve our understanding of beetle activity as well as tree responses, allowing us to develop effective management actions to address bark beetle attack in these iconic trees.
Thank you for helping us with this critical work!!
