Our 2024 Year in Review

This year has been the most productive year to date. Our team has been busy traveling throughout the Sierra Nevada collecting samples, taking measurements, gathering seeds and engaging people from all walks of life to spread awareness of the importance of old trees and ancient forests.

This year marks the completion of a four-year study examining how fire affects giant sequoia tree water use. We also initiated multiple new studies focused on understanding interactions between fire, drought and bark beetle attack in giant sequoias. As part of these new studies, we instrumented 24 trees with sensors to monitor tree water use and growth, climate and soil conditions.

In our conservation efforts, we were able to collect 135 bushels of giant sequoia cones from 63 trees in five groves located in Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. We also collected 121 bushels of sugar pine cones from 20 trees in Yosemite National Park. These cones hold precious seeds for the forests of the future.

During the season, our team engaged close to 100 unique volunteers from all over the world. These generous volunteers helped us complete our research objectives during 15 trips into the field. We had people join us from four different countries and 16 states, and were able to train 23 volunteers how to climb trees.

We could not do our work without the help of our supporters, donors and especially the volunteers who invest their time to join us in the trees. As we move into the new year, our hope is to create a stronger community to protect ancient forests through research, outreach, and conservation.
